Addressing The Antibiotic Resistance Problem

Purpose:
It is important for the students to make connections between new learning and prior knowledge. Through this program the students have been able to delve into the world of antibiotics. In this activity, they will research the causes of antibiotic resistance.

Procedure:
Ask the students to use resources such as journal articles, book references, and/or the internet to research the use, mis-use, and misunderstanding of antibiotics.   Have the students write a response to the three statements on the overhead entitled “Addressing the Antibiotic Resistance Problem.”

Use the statements that the students wrote in response to the three statements along with the Overhead Masters provided to have a class discussion about the causes of antibiotic resistance.  Finally, ask the student to generate ways to prevent antibiotic resistance.

Addressing The Antibiotic Resistance Problem
Each statement below describes a potentially inappropriate use of antibiotics.  Write a paragraph for each statement explaining how you would persuade people to eliminate unnecessary use of antibiotics.

Statement 1
In response to pressure from patients to “give me something,” some doctors prescribe antibiotics before they know whether a virus or bacteria cause a patients’ illness.

Statement 2
Antibiotics are widely used in livestock feed to improve the growth of animals

Statement 3
A popular marketing strategy for some products intended for healthy people (i.e. hand soaps and children’s toys) is to include antibacterial drugs in the products.
