The 2000 CORE Institute in Biology focused on biodiversity and addressed the following questions:
  • What is biodiversity?
  • Why is biodiversity important?
  • What are the major threats to biodiversity?
  • What are some solutions to the problems associated with biodiversity?

The institute approached inquiry-based science through a combination of methods.  One format was lectures that identified broad conceptual foundations for topics to explore in-depth and the construction of conceptual models to generate and test predictions.  Another was hands-on activities including short projects, field trips, and/or computer simulations.  Participants  designed their own and/or a collaborative web page (with instruction for novices through experts).  The program was derived from the National Science Education Standards and was linked to participants' local standards and curriculum.
