Ecology of Epidemic Diseases

Abstract

The class will work together to design a concept map to describe disease ecology. Then using the internet and/or library, each pair of students will use a list of symptoms to determine the ecology of their epidemic disease. They will report back to their classmates on a specific epidemic disease. This will allow for all students to have exposure to a number of different disease ecologies.

Breakout Project: Annual Centers for Disease Control Convention

Presentation of Topics: Studies of Current Epidemics in the World

Scenario:

Your office is notified of several individuals suffering from similar symptoms of disease. Your assignment is to:

  1. Identify the disease from the description of the symptoms ( Director will assign each team a specific list of symptoms.)
  2. Present a description of the disease. Include history of past epidemics.
  3. Construct a three-dimensional model, approximately 6 cm x 6 cm, of the organism causing the disease.
  4. Design a visual aide(s) of the disease’s ecology. This should include but is not limited to:
    1. Geographical location of the disease (include ecosystem)
    2. The life cycle of the agent of the disease. This would include any reservoir, vector, and host.
  5. Suggest methods for the treatment, the prevention, and elimination of the disease.
  6.
You and your fellow EIS agent will have 10 minutes to present your findings at the Annual Centers for Disease Control Convention in "Atlanta" on December 25. The Director of the CDC will determine your next year’s salary on the basis of the accuracy of your presentation and aesthetic appeal of your visual aides.
