Journal Woodrow Wilson Week June 30 -July 3rd

Biodiversity concepts and how they could relate to the science standards that could be shared with other school districts that are doing similar projects.

Activities during the week to introduce biodiversity

1. Discussion on our idea of Biodiversity using the following questions 2. Protist Lab to determine the diversity in pond water
We examined a variety of pond water samples and suggestions were given how to do use this activity as a method to introduce biodiversity

3. A creative exercise in volume The use of different materials such as rice, colored water, animal crackers , sand or colored sand to visually display the amount of organisms
In this exercise we used chart p. 35 -47 of text Biodiversity by Wilson
Our group used sand and we said 1%  = 1ml or 1animal cracker =1000 species  or 1 grain = 1 species

Scavenger Hunt
This was a study of different campus environments Here we were to devise a sample method to suit the site given. This would be useful to introduce students to a new study site.

JULY 1ST LECTURE BY ANDY DOBSON

In his lecture he gave the  main causes of Extinction

  1. Habitat loss
  2. Over-Exploitation
  3. Species Introduction
  4. Pollution
  5. Hybridization

VISIT TO AMERICAN MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY (AMNH)
 

Arthropod display Dinosaur Exhibit WW  at museum

JULY 3RD
Canoe trip on a canal near Forbes  Lab  Chemical Testing was done using La Motte kits on the Dissolved Oxygen,  Nitrogen, Phosphorus,  and pH of the canal. the purpose was to familarize us with the use of the kits
