Fishing for phytoplankton

Introduction/Procedure: In this activity, the students must design a protist catcher. This tool must not only catch
protists, but also concentrate them so that a large number of species may be collected in a relatively small amount
of water. Students may bring materials from home, construct their protist catcher, try it, and count their results
using flat capillary tubes or depression slides.

Materials: panty hose, socks, an old pillow case, other type of straining material, coat hanger, stapler, needle,
thread, flat capillary tubes, depression slides, and cover slips. Flat capillary tubes are available from:
VitroCom, Inc. P.O. Box 125 Mountain Lakes, NJ 07046. Their telephone number is (201) 402-1443.
Fax number is (201) 402 – 1445.
