Introduction/Procedure: In this
activity, the students must design a protist catcher. This tool must not
only catch
protists, but also concentrate them so that a
large number of species may be collected in a relatively small amount
of water. Students may bring materials from home,
construct their protist catcher, try it, and count their results
using flat capillary tubes or depression slides.
Materials: panty hose, socks, an old pillow
case, other type of straining material, coat hanger, stapler, needle,
thread, flat capillary tubes, depression slides,
