How to catch arthropods

Purpose: Present a variety of ways to collect arthropods.

Materials: various, see desriptions below

Procedure:
1. Understory sweep
With a canvas net connected to a hoop with parachute material and a short handle,
sweep an understory. Collect your sample.

2. Spider web identification
Using  cornstarch packed in three pairs of nylon knee highs, gently pat the “bag” upwind
of a potential spider web and identify it as orb, funnel, or tangle.

3. Insect trap
Using a bulb planter, make a hole in the soil under the litter. Place a plastic “SOLO” cup in the hole.
Pin a piece of cardboard over it to act as a fly to keep rain and other animals out. Collect trap later.

4. Tree branch bat
Bat tree branches with a stick. Collect anything that falls with a square canvas covered frame.
