1. At the NSTA Convention in Boston on March 25-28, LPT co-assistant
directors Deborah Engel-DiMauro and Tonka Irish enjoyed talking to many
Woodies, present and future, and had a chance to show the video produced by
the Howard Hughes Medical Institute highlighting the 1998 CORE Biology
Institute. It was the first time WWNFF-LPT designed an exhibit and staffed
a booth. If you visited the booth, please let us know what you thought about
the display.
2. The Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation is preparing a proposal
for a new Mathematics Fellows program calling for collaborative work of a
math researcher/ professor in a college or university and a middle school
math teacher. Middle school math Woodies: Are you interested in this kind
of collaboration? Do you have comments or questions, or would you like to
see the proposal-in-progress? Write Dean McMillin, mcmillin@woodrow.org for
more information or to send information on possible teams.
3. Awards and Honors
*Brenda Dempsey, BI96, was selected in 1997 as a Fulbright Memorial Fund
Exchange Teacher to Japan and in 1998 was one of 19 teachers selected by the
American Physiological Society as a summer research fellow.
*George Hague, CI85, was presented with the Chemical Manufacturers
Association (CMA) Catalyst National Award at the NSTA convention in Boston.
The annual award is presented to exceptional teachers of science, chemical
technology, and chemistry, and chemical engineers.
*David Tanis, C82, was named by the Michigan Science Teachers Association as
this year's College Teacher of the Year. The awards program established by
MSTA in 1974 annually recognizes educators for outstanding contributions to
the field of science education.
4. Opportunities
*Wanted: curriculum consultant with elementary background to articulate
three 6th grade science programs with 7th grade middle school integrated
