2. A meeting is planned with the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control
and the New York American Museum of Natural History to plan the biology
institute.
3. At the end of 1998, we bid farewell to WWNFF web architect, Paul
Burchard. He left New Jersey and is now doing research at UCLA.

5. Awards and Honors
* Stan Eller (BI96) won a Presidential Award for Science Teaching last year
for the high school division in Alaska.
* Jane Howell (MI 91) has completed her second presidency of the Wisconsin
Mathematics Council.
* Judy Jones (BI94) received National Board Certification in Young Adult and
Adolescence Science.
* Carl Koch (BI92) was named Region III Coordinator for NABT. This region
includes Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio and Michigan. Carl also just
finished up a two-year term on the NABT Board.
* David McMillin (CI85) was named Chemistry Teacher of the Year by the
Philadelphia section of the American Chemical Society.

* A workshop entitled "Go Ape Over Teaching Evolution and the Nature of
Science" will be held at Tufts University, March 27 from 8:30am to 6:00pm
during the NSTA national convention in Boston. Registration is by

* John Banister-Marx (BI95), a Fellow at the Wright Center for Innovative
Science Education and would like to encourage other Woodies to apply for
fellowships. The deadline is February 1, 1999 with decisions sent by March
1. It is a unique opportunity for secondary science teachers to work in a
university setting to develop special projects. More information and

* The Triangle Coalition for Science and Technology Education is seeking
applicants for the Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellow Program.
Outstanding teachers serve as fellows in Congressional offices and
committees for eight to eleven months. Applicants must teach science,
technology, or mathematics in public or private elementary or secondary
schools. Teachers on sabbatical or other professional leave are also
eligible. Applications must be postmarked no later than January 15, 1999.

* The Cleveland Botanical Garden is seeking candidates for two positions:
a. Director of Curriculum Development to help create a living laboratory
that educates and enchants visitors throughout the year. Candidates should
have at least eight years of teaching experience; skill in innovative
curriculum design, implementation, and assessment; experience working with
museums, zoos, or botanical gardens; and either undergraduate work in
education with a Ph.D. in one of the natural sciences or undergraduate work
in natural sciences and a Ph.D. in education.
b. Youth Education Coordinator to coordinate community, school, and outreach
education programs that teach botany, ecology, and environmental sciences.
Candidates should have a BS in Education with emphasis in a natural science
and a minimum of 5 years of teaching experience combined with administrative
responsibilities.
