1. The Leadership Program for Teachers is currently preparing for
CORE 1999, working with scientists and educators to develop the "heart" of
the institutes. In order to improve the institute's web component, the LPT
is looking to hire new technology personnel.

2. Attention all chemistry teachers or past chemistry team members:
Mike Bannon and Kathy Dombrink of the Household to High Tech TORCH team are
looking for a third member. If you are interested, contact Kathleen at
ackdomb@umslvma.umsl.edu.

3. The Howard Hughes Medical Institute is hosting Holiday Lectures
on Science via webcast and satellite broadcast on December 7th and 8th. The
theme is "Hearts and Hypertension: Blazing Genetic Trails." For more

4. Elke Bergholz (BI96)is getting ready for a month-long trip to
the Antarctic/South Pole to study ozone profiles. For more information about
this expedition, check out the website http://tea.rice.edu.

5. Several Woodrow Wilson teachers have been honored recently.

-- Sandra Duck Eidson (ESI97/BI96)and Fe Ellen Dumapias (ESI97) are
state level awardees of the Presidential Awards in Science Teaching.

-- Sharon Kirby (ESI97) is now a National Board Certified Teacher of
Science.

-- Angie Matamoros (CI86), science supervisor for Broward County
Schools, received an award from the Florida Association of Science Teachers
for Outstanding Science Educator of 1998.

-- Nancy Vawter (ESI97) was named President Elect of the Alabama
Science Teachers Association last month at the NSTA Southern Regional
Convention in Birmingham.

-- Anne Zellinger (ESI97)was selected for an Excellence in Science and
Mathematics Teaching Award, for which she was honored in a ceremony in
Washington, DC earlier this year.
