QUESTION FOR TEACHERS OF LAB-BASED SUBJECTS

CORE INSTITUTES
January 15th is the deadline for receipt of applications for Biology and

Environmental Science. Core Institutes, 28 June to 24 July 1998.

TORCH DURING ACADEMIC YEAR
Two TORCH Institutes will be held in Brooklyn in January 1998. This is a

significant change because it moves TORCH from an add-on to an integral
part of teachers work life and workday.

PRICE OF TORCH IS LOWERED
The price for TORCH -- other than Biology and Environmental Science - is

$9000 for 2-person teams and $11,600 for 3- and 4-person teams. This is
a significant change in price due to new funding and cost-cutting.
Please consider TORCH for building capacity in your districts.

TEACHERS AS ENTREPRENEURS
Both 1997 Biology and Environmental Science outreach institutes PAY
sites with funds from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute or the
National Science Foundation. The site does not pay anything to WWLPT.
Please call or email Mary Apodaca for more information, 609-452-7007,
X19, apodaca@woodrow.org/. This is one of our efforts to connect to
local professional development programs.

QUESTION FOR TEACHERS OF LAB-BASED SUBJECTS
A trip to Newark Public Schools brought the news that they could never
host a TORCH workshop that requires lab work because they don't have
labs. They can find a computer lab although Newark teachers wouldn't
have access in their classes. They see value in that. How can we make it

possible for them and their students to learn more in-depth content?

Happy New Year!
