| 07-28-03 Monday | Had a group meeting with Mary and Rob. They explained their work from the weekend and showed us the 18s sequencing results. We immediately worked with them to edit, align, and analyze the sequencing information. We are working with 18s ribosomal RNA of the small subunit. There seems to be a large insert into this gene. Once we blasted our sequences, the results were confirming that we have Idotea baltica. Upon further research, we discovered a journal article with different protocols for pcr reactions with only 2 minutes of warm up, fewer cycles, and varying temperatures. The authors of this article are Hermann Dreyer and Johann-Wolfgang Wagele from Germany. It was published in the Journal of Crustacean Biology Volume 22, No 2, pp. 217-234. |
Finalized the lesson study format sheets and activities. Steve is going to teach the lesson, so some minor changes in the vocabulary were made to smooth out the flow of the lesson. Also, objectives were dropped once we realized that the lessson was not going to meet as many as first discussed. Our lesson sheets are due tomorrow in order to make copies. |
| 07-29-03 Tuesday | Manipulated data in order to build our phylogenetic tree using Phylip. We continued to work on correlating the data to finish our poster. To view all of the data for the entire presentation view the electronic poster in the research section of our website. | All sheets were given final adjustments and copies were given to Tom for photocopying. |
| 07-30-03 Wednesday | Posters Due! | Presented our lesson study to the orange group. Everything went amazingly well. Steve was our presenter, and he followed the plan. The kids loved him, the lesson flowed, and everyone was very complimentary. We did receive some good suggestions to use more than just a picture of humans and to possibly extend the supplies to spark every child's interest. It was even mentioned that each student could make their own creature. Overall, the lesson study was a success. |
| 07-31-03 Thursday | Observed another group's lesson study plan. | |
