JAMES CALDWELL

James Caldwell is a physics teacher at Martin Luther King Jr. HS.  Currently he is studying for a masters degree in science education at City College of NY....estimated date of completion is May
2000.  In addition he is completing the necessary state requirements for certification in earth science.
Prior to teaching, James sepent 20 years advertising OTC drug products.  Teaching like advertising
is a business of communication.  Advertising sells a product, teaching sells education.

Objective:    To examine the processes involved in the bioremediation of oil spills.

Project:     Oil Degraders

Purpose:    To determine how naturally occuring microbes decompose oil
                 compounds.

Materials:    flasks, moth balls, pencil, marsh mud, stream mud, drops of oil,
                  Miracle Gro, microscope,

Procedures/methods:
            1.  Set up a control.
                Added 5 millileters of water to a flask.
                Placed a mothball in the flask.
                Measured the diameter of the mothball.

             2. Repeated the procedure but added broth and marsh mud to the moth
                ball.

            3.  Next we added broth, marsh mud and a drop of oil to the moth ball.

            4.  Next added Miracle Gro and marsh mud to the moth ball.

            5.  Added Miracle Gro, marsh mud and a drop of oil to the moth ball.

            6.  Added broth and stream mud to a moth ball.

            7.  Added broth, stream mud and a drop of oil to a moth ball.

            8.  Added Miracle Gro and stream mud to a moth ball

            9.  Added Miracle Gro, street mud and a drop of oil to a moth ball.
