As a recent New York Times article made clear, the proportion of teachers of color in the nation’s teaching force has not kept pace with the increasing diversity of America’s classrooms: While young people of color are now a majority of students in the nation’s public schools, fewer than 20 percent of their teachers are teachers of color.

A May 7 webinar on recruiting and retaining educators of color, co-sponsored by White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for African Americans and the Stanford Center for Opportunity Policy in Education (SCOPE), will feature the Woodrow Wilson Foundation’s Audra Watson, Program Officer and Director of Mentoring & Induction Strategy. Dr. Watson directs the Woodrow Wilson-Rockefeller Brothers Fund (WW-RBF) Fellowships for Aspiring Teachers of Color.

“As we’ve talked nationally about teacher quality, the presence of teachers of color hasn’t been discussed—almost as though the two issues are separate,” said Dr. Watson. “We need to address that.”
